Navidad en los Andes is the first complete study of the Christmas ritual practised every year in a small village of the Central Peruvian Andes, San Francisco de Querco (in the province of Huaytará, in the region of Huancavelica). The author, a Swiss musician and ethnomusicologist who has done research in Peru for several years, emphasizes the relationshp between the ancient pre-Hispanic celebrations of the summer solstice (Qhapaq Raymi, "the main festival") and the current, intensely syncretic, Christian ritual. The specific performance techniques of the Andes harp, the dangerous acrobatics, the choreographies, and the stupefying zapateos (the art of beating rhythm with the heels) with which the dancers "sing" the melodies played by the harp, the only musical instrument which accompanies these rites, are described. A final section offers reflections about current modifications of the ritual, influenced by migrants originally from the village but now resident in cities along the Peruvian coast, and by technology and communications.
